Test Overview
The IELTS Speaking Test is a face-to-face interview designed to assess your spoken English skills. It lasts between 11 to 14 minutes and is divided into three parts:
Part 1: Introduction & Interview (4–5 minutes)
– Purpose: To assess your ability to communicate opinions and information on everyday topics and common experiences or situations.
– Format: The examiner introduces themselves and asks you to introduce yourself and confirm your identity. Then, you’ll answer general questions about familiar topics such as home, family, work, studies, and interests.
Part 2: Long Turn (3–4 minutes)
– Purpose: To assess your ability to speak at length on a given topic, using appropriate language and organizing your ideas coherently.
– Format: You’ll receive a task card with a topic and points to cover in your talk. You have 1 minute to prepare and can make notes. Then, you’ll speak for up to 2 minutes on the topic.
– Purpose: To assess your ability to express and justify opinions and to analyze, discuss, and speculate about issues.
– Format: The examiner will ask further questions connected to the topic in Part 2. This part allows for a more in-depth discussion and may include abstract ideas and issues.
