In IELTS Writing Task 1, you’re required to write a summary of at least 150 words based on visual information such as graphs, charts, tables, maps, or diagrams. Your response should:

– Objectively summarize the main features.

Essay Structure

1. Introduction

   – Paraphrase the task prompt.

2. Overview

   – Summarize the main trends or key features.

3. Body Paragraphs

   – Provide detailed comparisons and data.

   – Group similar information logically.

Analyzing Visual Information

– Identify Key Features: Look for significant trends, highest and lowest values, and notable changes.

– Group Data: Organize information into logical groups for coherent paragraphs.

– Understand Units and Time Frames: Pay attention to units of measurement and the time period represented.

Language and Vocabulary

– Describing Trends:

  – Increase: rise, grow, climb, surge

  – Decrease: fall, decline, drop, dip

  – Stability: remain steady, stay constant

  – Fluctuation: fluctuate, vary

– Comparisons:

  – Higher than, lower than, the same as, more/less than

– Quantifiers:

  – A significant majority, a small minority, approximately, nearly

– Time Expressions:

  – From 2000 to 2010, over the period, during the decade

Time Management

– Planning: Spend 3-5 minutes analyzing the visual and planning your response.

– Writing: Allocate 12-15 minutes to write your essay.

– Reviewing: Use the remaining time to check for errors and ensure clarity.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

– Including Personal Opinions : Stick to describing the data presented.

– Overloading with Data : Focus on significant trends rather than every detail.
